A scientist in the making, Year 9 Muhammad Zayan Abbasi, represented Onslow College last week at the Wellington NIWA Science and Technology Fair, coming 2nd among all Year 9 entries! Zayan was also was awarded a special prize for his entry from Engineering New Zealand.
His project “Guardian of the Ocean”, was a working sea robot that can clean up oil spills in ocean accidents. He also showed how oil can be separated with the use of Materials Science. Zayan used hydrophobics to separate the oil from the water.
Thank you Zayan for sharing this wonderful news with the school – what an inspiration for all students to think outside the square, ask questions, and be curious about our future.
Chief Judge, Bradley Douglass, commented as part of the fair programme, “… By entering the Science Fair you’ve done something special. You’ve found the time to find out more about something you’ve seen or wondered about. You’ve taken your own ideas, along with the experience and knowledge of those around you, and created something new. But I hope you try to make this line of thinking ‘not special’ – it’s just what you have to do. No matter where you end up in the years to come, a bit of clear thinking will help you out.”
All the best for your scientific future Zayan!
