Wow what a week to report on! The summer tournament week proved to be a successful one for our Adventure Racing teams, Athletics, Futsal and a pair of our rowers. Congratulations on these incredible results, and to all those who competed in Onslow College colours this term.
We also received a huge amount of great photography. A selection is below.
Adventure Racing
The teams had two events over the Summer Tournament week – Rangitīkei Adventure Race on 21/22 March and the Taranaki 6hr Adventure Race on 28/29 March.
The Rangitīkei Adventure Race provided a stunning, rugged backdrop for the North Island Secondary Schools Adventure Racing Champs (NISSARC). As the first competitive event of the year for the Onslow College Adventure Racing club, our teams delivered impressive results across the board. Championship Results:
-
3rd Place (12-Hour Senior): Onslow College “A” (Annelise Q, Isla W, Oliver B-B, Felix H).
-
3rd Place (6-Hour Junior): Onslow Mixed Junior Team (Florence W-B, Jack B, Elsa J, Niko J).
-
4th Place (12-Hour Open): Onslow College “B” (Juliet B, Cameron J, Zara D, Savannah J). Their performance was elite; had they been eligible for NISSARC points, they would have secured a top-three finish.
The Taranaki 6-hour Adventure Race was a lot of navigating steep hills, thick bush, and even “walking the plank” into an irrigation pond!
1st School Boys: Luca M, Luca B-B, Jack B & Felix G.
1st School Mixed & 1st Overall School: Annelise Q, Oliver B-B, Felix H & Cameron J (HVHS) — winning by a nail-biting 47 seconds!
2nd School Girls: Elsa J, Florence W-B, Obi H & Maci W.
3rd Senior Mixed: Isla W, Zara D, Liko H & Juliet B.
3rd Family Team: Nico & Chris Chapman.
Massive thanks to the legendary parents and coaches who handle the logistics, early morning trainings, and the muddy gear transport! Next stop: NZ Orienteering Champs over Easter. Good luck, team!
Maadi Cup Rowing – Silver Medal
Finally, the hard work and training paid off for our rowers. A solid crew of 6 Rowers headed to Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel and came away with a medal! Reuben Andrews and Costin Eley (Both Y11) achieved a Silver Medal with a time of 7:16.22 in the Boys U16 Double Sculls event. Improving on their heat time (7:20.43), and their semi-final time (7:17.80)! Well done boys and to the whole team who represented Onslow so well.
Futsal (Akau Tangi)
Senior Boys – The team achieved a top 4 place in the country. Narrowly missing out on the gold medal match going down 1 nil to St Thomas of Canterbury. Then, down to the wire in a penalty shootout against St Pat’s Town didn’t go their way in the playoff for 3rd & 4th. A huge tournament for the boys! Credibly, Onslow College was the only co-ed secondary school to make the semi finals.
Senior Girls captain Iris Polaschek (Y13) wrote about her team’s experience at the tournament:
“This year’s futsal tournament was a wonderful experience for the whole team. Even though we had a hard few pool games, everyone played their hardest and the team improved over the course of the tournament. It paid off in the win over Sacred Heart, with everyone trying right until the end even though we were ahead. The team environment was enjoyable, with some of the most entertaining moments happening while hanging out in between games. Overall, it was a truly fun tournament which has left lasting memories.”
Ultimate – Taupō
“This year we took a team of 12 up to Taupo for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Ultimate Championships. We competed in the open division, which mostly consisted of all-boys schools. With that being said, this was a fun challenge for us, as our team consisted of half boys and half girls. Fortunately, we were still able to come away with some wins. Our best game was livestreamed, and we versed Takapuna Grammar. The game was pretty tight, but we managed to pull away at the end and win. Our hardest game was against Pakuranga College, who won the tournament. However, we scored the first point of the game! Our team was mostly the same from last year; however, we had two new additions. We have a range of abilities in our team, from NZ representatives to people new to the sport. We think our team worked together really well, and it was a very enjoyable tournament.” – Thanks for the write up Ella Young (Team Captain, Y13) and Sophie Jacobsen (Y13)
Senior Volleyball
Fazi Khalili (Y13) Boys Team Captain for the Tournament, reflected on the week: “We had a really special experience at Nationals and showed how much we’ve grown as a team. We played with great effort and heart, and it was clear how much our skills and confidence have improved. It was wonderful to support each other and enjoy the challenge together.”
Our Senior Girls narrowly lost in the 3rd/4th playoff for their division. Team Captain, Sam Gawe (Y13) said:
“The team had a strong showing at Nationals this year, finishing 4th in Division 5 while competing a full division higher than last year. As a new team, they gained valuable experience and identified plenty of areas to work on and refine heading into next season. Despite the challenges, it was an important stepping stone for the group. The team will especially miss the Year 13 players and the contribution they made during the tournament.”
Athletics – North Island Champs
Albert O’Brien continues to impress, this time at the North Island Champs in Auckland. He competed in the long jump, 200m, 400m and 800m. He ran a PB in the 200m and a SB (Season’s Best) in the 800m., and 1st 400m, 1st 800m, 1st Long Jump! What a result! Congratulations Albert.
