Onslow College

At Onslow College, through a whole school careers programme and individual guidance, we support our young people to successfully transition out of school. They develop career management skills to navigate lifelong decisions. We offer advice, information, opportunities for experience and develop networks of people to help attain their pathway goals.

We use the Onslow College CareerWise website to give our students a huge range of career resources, links to Universities and other Tertiary institutions, advice, tips and local events to navigate their own career pathway plus much more. Have a look here: https://onslow.careerwise.school/

We have a team of three staff members who work with our students from Year 9 to Year 13 to find the right pathway for them.

The Careers Team at Onslow College

Peter has been the Onslow College Careers Advisor since 2002. He has been in education since 1985 initially teaching Primary then Secondary level PE in the UK and Australia before coming back home to Wellington and Onslow College in 1999. The Careers Department has developed during his time to offer a full range of pathway planning opportunities for students.

Peter’s aim for every student is to leave school with goals and achievable plans, and know how they are going to reach them. Students are encouraged to utilise the Careers Department as a tool to achieve their future plans. Students and Caregivers can book an appointment to talk to Peter Chapman. Latest Career and Event News

In 2025, the Year 9 Maths programme at Onslow College plans to introduce an exciting initiative that involves collaboration with various employers. This programme will provide students with the opportunity to see how mathematics is applied in real-world contexts. The delivery of the programme will involve close cooperation between employers and Maths teachers, including in-class visits by professionals and site visits by students.

This award winning initiative, set up by SmartNZ called the Secondary School Employer Partnership (SSEP), has been successfully running in Waikato schools for over 10 years, and Onslow College will be the first school in Wellington to implement it. The programme helps students understand the relevance of what they are learning in Maths while also exposing them to different career paths, which is a key aspect of careers education.

The commitment involves two in-class visits and one site visit per term, for three terms. You do not need to have a child in Year 9 to participate—your willingness to support our school, teachers, and students is all that's required.

To make this programme a success, we are looking for employers to collaborate with us. If you're interested, we would love to hear from you. Specifically, we are seeking to help students understand the real-world application of measurement and geometry, this could mean employers in Engineering and Construction.  We are also wanting to demonstrate the use of general maths such as percentages, there will be a large variety of businesses here, which could include bankers, food businesses, IT or accountants.  We are also after employers who use data this could include employers in the High Performance Sports, Fitness, IT and Marketing. There will be many other jobs and professions that can contribute, so if you'd like to get involved, please don't hesitate to contact us.

This is a video showing how the programme works.

If you are interested in contributing to this meaningful programme, we would be delighted to have your support. Please email careersla@onslow.school.nz

Can you help us help our young people?

Part of supporting our young people with career education and pathways is to ensure they have chances to explore work opportunities, including through part-time work. Evidence shows that the more exposure to different types of work young people have, the better it benefits them, both in terms of employability and earnings potential.  Having a part time job is part of building life long skills.

If you know of any part-time mahi or are willing to have one or some of our students gain experience in your workplace, please email careersla@onslow.school.nz with any queries.
