Cell Phone Policy

Cell Phone Policy at Onslow College - 'Away for the Day'

Student Cell Phone Policy

The government has mandated the policy of Cell Phones ‘away for the day’. We will be implementing this policy from the beginning of Term 1, 2024. This policy is designed to ensure that the learning of all students is maximised, while minimising any potential for distraction and cyber-bullying. Our approach is “away for the day”, meaning cell phones either do not come with the student to school, or are switched off and in bags during the full school day. This policy applies for all year levels and includes interval and lunchtime.

If a student does bring their cell phone for emergency contact or health reasons, these must be switched off and kept in bags at all times.

It is important to note that if students do make the decision to bring a cellphone to Onslow College, they do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to any cell phone.

We understand that some parents like their students to have a phone to communicate with them after school, cell phones will be available for students during the after school pick up time. If a parent or caregiver needs to contact their student urgently during the day, they should call the office or contact their student via their school email address. If a student needs to use a phone there is one available to them in the school office.

How will this work at school?
Cell phones should not be at school or they should be in bags switched off. It is important to note that if students do make the decision to bring a cellphone to Onslow College, they do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to any cell phone.

If a student takes their cell phone out of their bag or is seen using their cell phone:

  1. The first time the staff will remind the student of the rule and ask them to put the phone back in their bag.
  2. The second time staff will ask the student to hand over the cell phone and it will be placed in an envelope with the student's name, Ako class and the date it was confiscated on it. The cell phone will be taken to the office where it can be picked up by the student after 3:10pm.
  3. The third time staff will ask the student to hand over the cell phone and it will be placed in an envelope with the student's name, Ako class and date it was confiscated on it. Parents will be notified by email that they will need to come to the school office to collect their student’s phone.

If the student has their phone out at school a fourth time, there will be a hui arranged between the Dean and the parent, to discuss the student not bringing the phone to school.

If there is repeated non-compliance, further steps will be discussed between whānau and the Senior Leadership Team.

Cell Phones ‘away for the day’ exemptions
If there are exceptional circumstances you may apply for an exemption by emailing the principal on principal@onslow.school.nz

We will endeavour to process exemptions in 5 working days.

Health and emergency situations
In matters related to a student's immediate health and safety concerns, a parent or caregiver can apply at any time to the principal for a period of exemption (e.g., medical conditions or protection issues). Students with additional learning needs, where a cell phone specifically improves their access to learn, may apply for an exemption.

Please note with all exemptions and exceptions appropriate usage guidelines and other relevant school rules still apply.
