Kia ora e te whānau,
This week marked a significant milestone in our school year as our senior students began their NCEA examinations. We know they are well-prepared to take on this challenge, and we wish them all the best over the coming weeks.
While the school is now quieter with our seniors on study leave, we are still buzzing from a series of outstanding recent achievements. I was thrilled to attend the College Sport Wellington SPOTY Awards, where Onslow College had 15 finalists and won 7 code awards. This remarkable result made us the most successful co-ed school in Wellington for code winners, a true testament to our students’ talent and the support of their coaches and community. Our Arts students have also shone brightly, with our two choirs—Ngā Manu Tīoriori and Ngā Waipāhīhī—both winning Gold medals at the MEFA Awards, alongside a Silver medal for our Big Band.
This culture of excellence is fostered by our exceptional staff. A special congratulations to Whaea Liv Copeman, who was named the Young Enterprise Wellington City Teacher of the Year. That this nomination came from three of her student teams speaks volumes about the positive relationships she builds.
In the last newsletter I made mention of the progress being made with our building projects, and today I am excited to share some updates on this, and showcase some visualisations from the preliminary designs that have been completed in order for our project to go out for tender today.
Below are a number of images of these preliminary designs showing the positioning of the new building (Block X in Ministry of Education naming terms) relative to the existing buildings on campus, as well as a number of perspectives looking from both arrival and within the college…
In the coming week site preparations begin on the turf construction above the main school building, and a contract has been signed to construct the double sized teaching space, changing rooms, toilets and gear storage that will sit adjacent to the turf with work beginning on that in the coming weeks.
This is a really positive development and a great way for us to head into summer! Finally, I look forward to celebrating our academic, cultural and community spirit with students, staff and whānau next Thursday evening at Pō Whakanui.
In the meantime, please reach out to me or any of the Senior Leadership Team should you have any questions or concerns.
Nga mihi nui,
Jono Wyeth
