On 27 October, students and whānau packed out the Arts Centre for the OC Film Awards—a fantastic evening celebrating the skill, imagination, and hard work of our Media Department. Throughout the night, a captive audience was treated to an extraordinary lineup of films playing on light and shadow, designed to amuse, impress, and captivate.

This year’s entries made ambitious use of cinematography and special effects, delivering stories that were both faithful and boundary-pushing across a wide range of genres—including found footage, murder mysteries, mockumentaries, and film noir. We had pieces that provoked existential dread with a healthy sprinkle of absurdism, alongside a somewhat inexplicably dominant theme: murder, particularly featuring murderous teachers.

Every frame on screen was brought to life entirely by student hands—whether two, four, or six, depending on the group size. Across both year levels, we asked our students to cast their imaginations wide, craft a vision, and consider the underlying message and emotional impact on their audience. That vision then gets shaped and reshaped by the practical realities of production and the frantic pace of teenage life. Somewhere along the way, it all comes together into truly impressive creations.

We presented a range of honors, from Best Cinematography to Best Vibes, complete with a live vote for Audience Favourite across both Year 12 and Year 13. Winners proudly walked away with a coveted Golden Barbie trophy.
We are immensely proud of all the nominees and winners from this year’s OC Film Awards. Our deepest gratitude goes out to the incredible support network behind these films—to the whānau and friends who assisted along the way, thank you for your ongoing support.
