Onslow’s Adventure Racing Club recently completed its annual tramp on the Atiwhakatu Hut Track. A group of 23 students, who have been training together all year, participated in the trip. The tramp served as a training opportunity for the two teams heading to the national finals for the Hilary Challenge (senior students) and Get2Go (junior students) competitions, both organized by Hillary Outdoors.
A Test of Skills and Teamwork
The students were split into three groups, allowing everyone to hike at a pace that suited their fitness level. Along the way, coaches set various challenges, including problem-solving and memory exercises, to test the teams’ skills. A highlight was the entertaining performance skits the teams put on during Sunday lunch.
After a day of hiking, students enjoyed campfire cooking by torchlight and playing card games in the evening. The senior Hilary Challenge team members took their training a step further by sleeping outdoors under tarps in temperatures that dropped to -1°C.
The trip also brought some memorable moments, like one student who made pancakes and coffee for his dad on Father’s Day, complete with all the toppings. Despite the rain and mud, it was fantastic to see so many students embracing the outdoors and having a great time.
All the best for the Hillary Challenge and Get2Go Competitions coming up in the next few weeks!
