Panui to Whanau – 7th March, 2024

07/03/2024 By Editor

Kia ora e te whānau,

We held a practice Lockdown on Tuesday morning to assess our emergency procedures in case a real event occurs in our community. Working with Harrison Tew, a company specialising in emergency management for schools, we put emergency plans in place in case of a situation. We tightened some procedures and confirmed that we were implementing a well run response. Everyone responded to instructions and did extremely well

In the event of a real emergency, the Onslow College Website will be your best source of information and updates. Thank you for your support while we carried out this practice.

As Autumn arrives, and days get shorter and cooler, we ask all Onslow College whanau to take care of yourselves and others. Covid is still around and we have noticed a surge in cases among students and staff. We highly recommend reading, again, the advice from Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) here of isolating for 5-days to protect others in our community. We understand having relievers in place of usual teachers  can be disruptive for students, but we will do our best to minimise changes where possible. Any concerns please reach out to your child’s Ako teacher.

Ako Teacher Conferences are coming up next Wednesday the 13th March. Bookings close on Tuesday, 12th at 3pm. These conferences can be in-person or online. We urge you to connect with your child’s Ako teacher, and help build a relationship between all parties.  All the research shows that better connection between home and school really impacts the success of, and significant progress for students’ outcome at school. If you need to see another teacher or make more time, please contact your Ako teacher to make another appointment. To book, head to the SchoolBridge App on your smartphone or go to https://onslow.bridge.school.nz/ in your web browser. From the dashboard select the ‘Student-Whānau-Teacher Conferences’ icon.

The Onslow College Festival held last Thursday was another success! The day was filled with laughter, cool dress ups and a whole lot of team spirit. A huge shout out to Ben Rogers, all staff and students for their immense effort putting this day together. It really is a highlight of the term here at Onslow.

There’s a reel here that captured some of what the day looked like.

Clubs Expo is on Friday 8th March in the Hall. Getting involved in a school club is another great way to feel connected to your kura and get to know other students at school. It can also lead to some amazing experiences, skills and opportunities. Please encourage your child to get involved in something! If the club they want to join doesn’t seem to be running (or exist), get them to ask their Ako teacher about how to start one up. We fully support students wanting to start something new – just ask.

Onslow College Sports – Some excellent news; our Ultimate Frisbee A team remains undefeated in the competition so far, great work! Summer tournament week (starting Monday 18th March) is around the corner with Futsal, Volleyball, Ultimate, Cricket and Rowing teams all participating.

School Production – The Sound of Music…. but not as you know it. April 3rd – 6th.

Come and see the Onslow College version of this classic theatre show! Tickets are on sale now.

“In a distant land, far, far away, reside a people, happy and content, at peace with the world and their place within it.

Something stirs…”

Through fantasy and fairytale, using a music theatre classic, we will weave a tale of power and oppression. Come and see our characters tell their story as they face the truth of their world and seek to escape its confines; finding love, friendship and hope along the way.

Remember to keep in touch with what is going on in our Onslow Community through our new Facebook page and, if you prefer, we have an official Instagram page as well.

Please reach out to me or any of the Senior Leadership Team if you have any questions.
