Sea Week Clean Up

The student Kaitiaki Leadership Team organised a Waipahīhī rubbish collection on the 6th March to mark Sea week, Aotearoa’s national week for celebrating the ocean.

An enthusiastic group of akonga collected bags of plastic, cans and other rubbish out of the awa and from the surrounding ngahere. The collection made these environments cleaner and ensured that the plastic could not make its way down the Waipahīhī awa into Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington Harbour. Most plastic enters the ocean around Aotearoa from land-based sources, via the wind or through stormwater and rivers during heavy rainfall events.
