Our winter sports season concluded with immense pride as students represented us across the motu during Winter Tournament Week. From Netball and Football to Equestrian, Basketball, Hockey and Rugby, our athletes displayed outstanding determination and sportsmanship. Some of the scores did not reflect how close the games were!
Our Boys 1st XI Footballers had 8 games, four of which were extremely close losing only in penalty shootouts! Two of our top scorers, Jett Allan and Jack Anderson were included in a Five-way tie for the Golden Boot – with each player scoring 7 goals. Overall, the Boys came in 7th place. Our Girls 1st XI fought hard in Napier came a respectable 8th place in their draw.
Our Equestrian team did extremely well, along with Caitlyn Ness from St Mary’s were the CTR Team Overall champions at NISS. CTR stands for Competitive Trail Riding and there were at least 185 people in teams of 4-5 in the event. Individual results:
Isla Dunshea came 4th in the Equestrian quiz and 7th in Show Hunter.
Willa Weaver came 3rd overall individual in the CTR and 7th in the Show Jumping.
Caitlyn Ness came 1st in CTR overall individual and 4th in Show Hunter.
Maci and Isla Weir were awesome – with Isla jumping some massive jumps.
The girls were a credit to the school displaying a positive and thoughtful attitude towards everyone, showing manaakitanga.
Our combined Onslow/Newlands Rugby team had a great week in Napier coming an overall 4th Place. Our Senior A Netballers ended up in 17th place overall. Hockey Girls came 16th, Boys came 12th, and our Senior A Boys Basketball had a tough draw of mostly Div 1 Wellington teams, placing 19th overall.
A huge event for a lot of our athletes, some of them experiencing attending a tournament as big as this for the first time. Huge thanks to all the whānau, transporters, fundraising support and the generous community surrounding our young people. They couldn’t have done it without you!
