Kia ora e te whānau,
We are excited to announce the new Student Leadership Structure starting in 2025. This new structure has been shared with students, teachers and the whanau group and we are looking forward to working with students on this exciting new phase for Onslow College. This is the presentation of the new structure that was shown to students. Please read it and encourage your tauira to get involved!
In celebration of Matariki, the Music department is putting on a ‘Matariki Arts Festival’ tonight, Thursday 27th June. It will showcase performances from Kapa Haka, Music students, ShowQuest and photography and visual art students. The concert will be held in the school Hall, starting at 6.30pm.
Matariki represents the Māori New Year, it is a time to reflect upon where we stand and who we are in this moment in time; it is a time of rebirth and renewal. Mānawatia a Matariki
Next week, we will be sending out a survey regarding timetable changes for 2025. There will be an opportunity to discuss these changes in person, on Tuesday 23rd July at 6pm. On the survey, you will be asked to rsvp, and once we know numbers, we will confirm a venue for the discussion.
Last week, the Onslow College Chess Team competed in the Interschool competition. They came 4th out of 22 other college teams, which is a fabulous achievement. This means the Onslow A team qualified for nationals which is held at Wellington College, September 28th & 29th.
The Year 13 Major Production starts next week. The two drama classes are performing ‘Wheelers Luck – a rural comedy” over 4 nights. It should be a delight to all those watching. All the best to our drama students involved.
Pride Week was a lot of fun and we were really delighted how our students engaged in the many activities available. We are very proud of the way the majority of our students follow our values. However, we have been noticing an increase in derogatory and homophobic language around the school. We have been focusing on this in our AKO classes and we would appreciate any support whānau could give us to live our values, through conversations at home.
Due to Matariki Public Holiday, the school will be closed on Friday 28th June. Have a safe and happy long weekend.
Please reach out to me or any of the Senior Leadership Team if you have any questions.
Nga mihi nui,
Sheena Millar
Tumuaki/Principal
