At the end of June, the Onslow College Chess Team competed in the Regional Interschool competition. It was a big event with 22 other Wellington secondary school teams participating. After some tightly fought games, the team came away with 4th place which is a huge achievement. This means the Onslow team qualifies for the National Interschool Finals which is being held at Wellington College, September 28th & 29th.
Thanks to staff Sean Tholen for being the teacher in charge and Tash Bethune for accompanying the team to the competition. Student team leader, Year 11, Luke Chang said, “…I want to thank Daniel Roscoe and Matthew Daken who won important games during the competition.”’
We wish the team every success in September.
Onslow College Chess Club meets every Thursday lunchtime in Room 35, and welcomes anyone keen to play and learn more about the game. Students are welcome from any year level and there are always people willing to help newcomers.
