The Onslow Enviro Group, led by Kaiako Hamish McWilliam, ran a Vegetarian Food Fair at lunchtime on Friday 24 May. There was a great atmosphere in the school hall and people sat down together to eat and chat.
The event made $340, which the Enviro Group is donating to Forest & Bird to help fund their work as champions for te taiao in Aotearoa and Kaibosh Food Rescue for their work in redistributing food that would otherwise go to waste in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
The Enviro Group at Onslow is made up of students from across all year levels who meet on Tuesday lunchtimes. The group will participate in the NZ Garden Bird Survey for the fourth year in a row later on in Term 2. They have worked in the ngahere (forest) restoration area near the Waipahīhī Stream and will do more planting and releasing of young rakau (trees) from weeds later this year. The group hopes to learn to identify some of the biodiversity (trees, birds, insects, fungi, etc.) around the school and visit the biodiversity collection rooms in the back of Te Papa later in 2024.
