On Friday June 7th, Onslow College performed at the NZ Choral Federation secondary choral competition, the ‘Big Sing’, at Michael Fowler Centre.
Onslow has two choirs; Ngā Manu Tīoriori, an all-comers non-auditioned choir led by Cameron Stewart and Kathy Roy, and a Chamber Choir, a smaller auditioned group led by Kathy Roy. Both choirs are accompanied by Jocelyn Oldcorn. The students impressed at the competition and most importantly, had a great time.
Onslow College Tumuaki, Sheena Millar, attended the Gala performance. “…The joy shown by both choirs, as they performed, was contagious. Their hard work was obvious and I felt very proud of them on the night.”
Music teacher at Onslow College, Kathy Roy, said “It was a fantastic day and the students were buzzing. I was incredibly proud of how the students looked out for one another and held themselves proudly on stage.”
The Big Sing is a regional secondary schools choral festival that takes place in 10 centers involving around 8,000 students from over 200+ schools, supported by their families and communities. The Big Sing has been taking place for over 30 years and is New Zealand’s largest choral event.
