Pānui mō te Whānau – 2nd May, 2024

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome back to Term 2, we hope everyone managed to have some downtime and a break from the usual routine. We have a busy term ahead with winter sports starting, teacher only days and union meetings. Please take note of the dates below as this will impact students and when classes are running.

Paid Union meeting 17 May, students finish at 12pm. Due to the Paid Union meetings in Wellington on May 17th, students will finish at 12pm that day. Please let Main Reception know on info@onslow.school.nz by Monday 13th May if your student needs supervising for the afternoon. Supervision will take place in the library.  Thanks for your support.

Teacher Only Days – We have two Staff only days this term. On Friday 31st May our staff will be attending the Loop Ed Conference in Wellington. This is one of the largest educational conferences in New Zealand and we look forward to guest speakers and workshops on offer. On Tuesday 4 June our staff will be attending a morning with our Kāhui Ako and then working on developing our curriculum and timetable structure in the afternoon. This means that school will be closed and there will be no supervision of students on these days:

  • Friday 31st May
  • King’s Birthday, Monday 3rd June (a public holiday)
  • Tuesday 4th June.

Student Subject Teacher conferences are coming up on the 7th May (online) & 8th May (in-person). All details were emailed to whanau before the holidays. A further copy of that is in this link.  School will finish at 1pm on these days. If students need supervision please let the office know via info@onslow.school.nz by Monday 6 May.

You’ll have seen in the news that the no cellphones at school policy is now, officially, in effect. For us at Onslow, it is business as normal. Thanks for your continued support of ‘Away for the day’. For a refresh of our policy and process read this

Attendance Process – We have made changes to our Attendance Process to make it clearer and easier for everyone to understand. You can find the updated process here on our website.

It’s great to see how many students have registered for Winter Sports. We thank all the volunteers and parents who are helping out coaching and managing teams, plus running your kids around to practices and games on time.

New Clubs at School: Please reinforce for students to check out the screens and posters around the school for new clubs starting up this term.

Celebrating Onslow Students:

Yr13 Alison Power has been selected for the NZ Young Physicist team competing in the International Young Physicist Tournament in Budapest, Hungary, in July. Alison was asked to try out for the NZ team based on her presentation in the NZ Young Physicist Tournament. This involved her researching and carrying out an investigation into a new problem involving magnetic levitation that she presented to the NZ team selectors. Amazing work Alison!

Celebrating Onslow Sportspeople:

A huge amount of sports results have come to us over the holiday period. While we can’t feature everyone’s achievements here, our Onslow College Sports Instagram page has been a constant feed of the amazing talent at Onslow and we are so proud of students’ achievements. Make sure you check it out.

We do want to acknowledge some students who have had some major sporting achievements in the last few weeks:

Ross Miller – Diving medals at NZ Nth Island Champs and Australian Champs in Melbourne

Albert O’Brien – Two T/F 20 U17 NZ records at age 13

George Fullelove – Selected for the NZSS U16 Boys Football team

Celena Gotico – Athletics (100m Hurdles & Long Jump), Senior A Netball, Senior A Basketball, U17 National rep for Basketball and & Junior Girls Basketball Coach

Isla McKenzie – 4 Awards at Cricket Wellington Awards for Women’s Club Cricket – Club Cricketer of the year, Club Bowler of the year, Best Bowling Performance (7/16), Best Overall Performance of the season.

Please reach out to me or any of the Senior Leadership Team if you have any questions.
